Instant Replay In Baseball: Its About Time...

My Fellow Phans,

I am delving once again into a baseball topic, but don’t worry I will return to our beloved Phillies a little later tonight. Anyways, onto another baseball topic: the use of instant replay in baseball.

Last night’s blown call by Jim Joyce ruining a perfect game for a young pitcher has once again thrown the topic of instant replay into the game of baseball. This is a very complicated issue and, having said that, I will not delve too deeply into the issue.

All I will say is this; Major League baseball needs to very slightly expand their current replay system. With our current system, umpires can review home runs based on their own judgment calls. If they deem a home run call to be questionable,  are unsure if it is fair or foul or even if it is a homer than they can go into the clubhouse and review mid game to overturn or keep the call on the field.

I like the home runs idea, but the idea needs to be expanded to determine basic fair or foul calls. If a ball is hit down the line, sometimes the ump cannot possibly see where the ball is at. Its little things like that that need to be monitored. There is nothing major, just a small type of call here and there that an ump may have trouble seeing. I’m not asking to monitor balls and strikes as that is one part of the game that should always be up to human judgment. The strike-zone of a particular umpire is their signature; their trademark. You have to keep that part of the game up to human interpretation.

No matter how you shape it, mistakes like the call last night at Detroit should never happen and most definitely not in such a critical moment in a ballgame.

I’m sure we can all agree with that.

Until we meet again Phillies Fans, Happy Readings and Go Phillies!!
